Thankfully, you’ve realized that life is pretty dull for those who haven’t travelled internationally. Yes, it reads like a snobbish thing to say, but we know it’s true. You can’t keep spending all your time fantasizing about the places you read about in books or magazines, or the places you see on TV. It’s time to go, and this is why you’ve gone ahead and made your new year resolution to travel (of which we are very proud).

We will be giving some newbie traveler tips that might come in handy, or not, but are great to know.

Have A Passport

While I would love to just assume that we all have passports, I am aware that assumption is dangerous, and also that a number of people actually don’t. Please don’t wait until you’re about to start making your travel plans. If you don’t have an international passport, you should apply for one immediately because how are you going to leave without it?

Check Your Power Adapter

Power outlets often differ as you journey from place to place, so check to make sure your adapter will work or carry a spare. Personally, I carry about three different types with me every time.

Give Notice

Before your trip, there are people you might need to alert that you will be leaving the country like your office, you bank, your doctor, etc. Always tell them well in advance so they can let you know if there is anything you need to do before you leave to ensure nothing goes wrong on your trip.

Meet A Local

A lot of people underestimate the benefits of meeting up with locals in a new city. This opens up so many opportunities for you as they can show you places you would probably miss on your own. Of course you have to be careful while interacting with strangers in a strange city, but not so careful that you miss out on all the fun.

Use A Map

For some reason I am yet to understand, some people actually refuse to use a map even when they continuously get lost.  There really is no shame in it. Imagine all the time you’re wasting going around in circles when you could be having actual fun.

Resist Jet Lag

I know, it’s hard, but I also know you don’t want to spend all your time asleep. Try to get some sleep on the plane, and just adjust to the time in the new country. For instance, if you usually go to bed around 8pm at home, wait until 8pm in this new place before you go to bed as well.

Public Transport is Your Friend

It may seem scary, but it’s often the easiest way to get around and sometimes the most affordable as well. Plus, it’s also a great way to meet locals who you might share some common interest with and end up hanging out with.

Enjoy Every Moment

Don’t forget the reason why you’re traveling is to experience new things and be part of awesome adventures. Don’t waste too much time reading guidebooks looking for where to go and what to do. Sometimes, make your own adventure.

Always Pack Comfortable Shoes

Trust me on this one. You will need a pair of shoes that will allow walk around a large city for days. Those fancy shoes you’re thinking about packing? You’re probably never going to wear them.

Take Pictures

Make memories and capture as many of them as you can. It doesn’t even matter if they look ridiculous or touristy. It just means you lived in the moment and you have the proof. Also, don’t be shy to ask people to help you take pictures. Would be a shame to miss a great photo-op.

Bonus tip: It’s okay to take touristy photos of yourself at places like the fictional Harry Potter Platform 9 3/4 at King’s Cross Station.
