Pardon the title but statistics do not lie! The list was curated from Dream Grow and shows the popularity of apps based on users. In June 2017 Facebook created a huge gap in the app race when Mark Zuckerberg announced that the app now had two billion monthly visitors. They basically jumped by 60 million monthly active users from 1.94 billion in March 2017 to two billion in June 2017. Following closely on the list of populated apps are YouTube, Instagram, Twitter and Reddit.

FaceBook

The social networking site was founded in February 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg and fellow students at Harvard Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes. The craze was unreal, everybody was on Facebook and it became the app to connect with lost friends, make new friends, chat and basically set the pace for what will become a world of social media influencing and influencers. The steady growth of the platform over the years can be credited to their aggressive acceptance of disruptive innovation as they have subsidiaries such as Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and Oculus VR. It currently has two billion monthly visitors, literally, everybody has a Facebook account and if you don’t have one now doesn’t mean you never opened one.

The video sharing app created by three former PayPal employees Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim in February 2005 was bought by Google in November 2006 for US$1.65 billion. It allows users upload, view, rate, share, comment on videos, and subscribe to other users. There’s a plethora of content that is churned from the app such as video clips, TV show clips, music videos, short and documentary films, audio recordings, movie trailers, short original videos, and educational videos. Another form of content which surfaced through the app is video blogging aka vlogging and has aided to populate the number of users. This app currently records one billion monthly visitors with a wide variety of content to choose from.

Instagram

The photo sharing app was created by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger and launched in October 2010 as a free mobile app exclusively for the iOS operating system. After its launch in 2010, it had one million registered users in two months and as of April 2017 has recorded 700 million users. Two years later an Android version was released and as of October 2015, the collective users of the app had uploaded 40 billion photos. The ability to upload pictures wasn’t new but Instagram gave a photo book feel and engaged users through popularised hashtags. The appealing community on Instagram led them to be acquired by Facebook in April 2012 for approximately US$1 billion.

Created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams, the social networking site gained rapid popularity and had 100 million users posting 340 million tweets a day as of 2012. Described by Business Standard as the, “SMS of the Internet” and is checked by 81% of millennials. As the older generation flip their newspapers to keep abreast of the happenings, the millennial check their Twitter timeline. The app has been influential in creating campaigns for social causes and breaking news. It records 313 million users and also happens to be the personal diary of the President of the United States of America.

Reddit

Reddit
Founded by University of Virginia roommates Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian in 2005. The app is a social news aggregation, web content rating, and discussion website. Discussing a wide range of topics which include news, science, gaming, movies, music, books, fitness, food, image-sharing, and many others. The community members can submit content such as text posts or direct links. Registered users then vote submissions up or down to determine the position of said content on the page. Submissions with the most up-votes appear on the front page or the top of a category. Reddit currently boasts of 250 million users.
