Every week, history is being made around the globe. In the United States, the former first family unveiled their paintings at the Smithsonian. In the spirit of Valentine, Vice President Osinbajo announced the latest elite couple in town. These are the stories that made our week.

The Obamas in painting

 

The official National Portrait Gallery portraits of Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, by Black artists Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald, were unveiled in Washington on Monday.

The official portrait of the former first family of the United States, Barack and Michelle Obama, was unveiled at a ceremony at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery. The paintings were done by renowned artistes, Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald. Wiley painted Obama sitting in a chair with an intense expression while Amy Sherals painted Michelle with a calm expression. The paintings have had mixed reviews on social media but the Obamas chose these artists based on their connection to the artists and are very pleased with it.

No dogs for Governor

 

Angus Woolley, the dog who wants to contest in the governor race in Kansas in the United States has been denied. The reasons, of course, are obvious. Yet, the owner of the dog, Terran Woolley says that Wolley is a Republican and is running on the grounds that there is no age limit for the governorship race. In an interview with CNN, they shared their inspired to be the six teenagers who intend to run for governor this November. Since Woolley is 23 [2 years of dog age], they saw it wise for him to run.

Nigeria’s elite couple

 

Nigeria’s Vice President, Professor Yemi Osibanjo, took to Twitter to announce the engagement of his daughter, Oludamilola, to Hajia Bola Muinat Shagaya’s son, Oluseun Bakare. Although this news is great for the couple and shows on a grand scale that religion is not a barrier to love, this news has been highly controversial. Stating that the nation’s VP is a pastor getting married to a Muslim, social media is asking about the church’s standards of marriage.

Kenya for the win. Again!

The third annual Access Bank Lagos City Marathon saw Kenya-born Frenchman Abraham Kiprotich win the race taking home the prize money of $50,000 (N18 million) in the male category. He defended his title as he has won the marathon, three times in a row. The marathon which kicked off from the National Stadium in Surulere and ended at Eko Atlantic. Ronny Kiboss and Peter Benjamin both of Kenyan emerged in second and third place winners, taking home, $40,000 (N14 million) and $30,000 (N10 million) respectively.

Ethiopian ladies for the win!

For the female category of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, Ethiopia’s Herpha Guta won the race, winning the whopping sum of $50,000 (N18 million). Fellow country women Girma Getachew and Ayelu Hordofa came in second and third winning the prize money of $40,000 (N14 million) and $30,000 (N10 million) respectively. Group Managing Director, Access Bank Plc, Dr Herbert Wigwe, emphasised the bank’s immense pride as a title sponsor of the marathon, stating that the event is an opportunity to highlight the need to adopt a healthy lifestyle.
