Eating out is always a good idea but the best thing to do on a weekend when you’re tired of sitting at a restaurant every other time is to opt for takeout dessert. Imagine your weekend spent indoors with the best comfort food money can buy and your premium subscription to Netflix.

Choosing your poison might be very hard and I advise you stray from the regular and try out cakes and doughnuts?

I personally do not like cakes but when it comes to the red velvet cake at Helado Delicia, then I am a believer. My first experience of Healado Delicia was accidental as we stopped by the Oando filling station right after the second toll gate on Lekki-Epe expressway to buy fuel. The intention changed when we saw the space inside the filling station with glass walls and the name written in green and pink. The décor inside was a burst of colours and the perfect sitting arrangement for double-dates.

Red velvet cake

As interesting as it sounds, your mission here is to order a slice of cake and take home. Helado offers a variety of dessert options from brownies and pastries to cakes. However, my poison, their red velvet cake is one of the best red velvet cake I’ve had in Lagos. It doesn’t taste like cake mix with red colouring, it’s dense and with the second layer of icing which makes the cake creamy. It has just the right amount of everything to make you want to come back for more.

Be careful, too much of this cake will make you sick (of the cake that is), so have it in moderation. You can try their chocolate cake, I know a number of people that swear by it.

Doughnuts

The perfect doughnuts to get while on this take-out journey is done by Coco Ribbon NG which has outlets in Lagos (Plot 233 Jubril Martins off Ajose Adeogun, Victoria Island) and Abuja (Wuse 2). This box of goodness is a little bit pricey for a box of six. However, it is what the doctors ordered when you are battling this thing called life.

The best part of the doughnuts isn’t the sugar-frosted coating. It’s the diverse number of fillings that come with it. The custard filling doughnuts are a delight, let’s not get started on the Nutella filling. I’m very selective with my fillings so I stuck to the vanilla custard, Nutella and raspberry filling. Different strokes for different folks, but I suggest you try each unique doughnut that comes in the box.
