Google launched a new app called “Google Pay for Android” yesterday. On the surface, the app allows you to make and track purchases with your phone. However, Google has so much more in store for this new feature.

Here’s what you need to know about the new app.

  • Google Pay is a merger of two formerly separate apps—Android Pay and Google Wallet. Android Pay was Google’s answer to Apple Pay which allows users to pay for goods and services with their phones while Google Wallet offered peer-to-peer payments.

  • Google has re-branded Wallet as Google Pay Send in the meantime. For people who already have Wallet installed, a new update will replace it with Google Pay Send.

  • Google Pay Send currently exists because peer-to-peer payments are not ready on Google Pay yet. They will be available in the next couple of months and both app will be merged into one.

  • For now, Google Pay functions as an updated version of Android Pay offering two options: Home and Cards. The Home screen shows recent purchases and nearby stores that accept Google Pay. The Cards screen lists all credit or debit cards that have been added by the user, gift cards and features like PayPal and Visa Checkout.
