Prose Of The Week: We Should All Be Feminists By Chimamanda Adichie

Remember Chinua Achebe’s quote to define Chimamanda? ” Adichie came almost fully made “. I totally agree with this and with the new book ‘We Should All Be Feminists’ only reinstates the fact that she is a blessing to the African literary community and beyond.

After a TEDX talk in 2013, the text was birthed, in which Adichie combined her personal experience of growing up in Nigeria with an acute analysis of the complexity of modern feminism. You might know the talk but not from the original video but from Beyonce’s song ‘ Flawless’.

Reorientation is what is clearly needed when people hear the word ‘Feminist’, instead of thinking of an angry bitter woman trying to prove herself to the world, the world should  think of a woman who is capable of being a respectable member of society in all ramifications. The personal, eloquently-argued essay, offers readers a unique definition of feminism for the twenty-first century, a definition reach in inclusion and awareness.

The Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary ‘ a person who supports the belief that women should have the same rights and opportunities as men‘. We should be feminists, society has taught us that women are the weaker sex, women are emotional, women shouldn’t hold certain positions based on the reasons listed above, and the list is endless. This book is a must read for children and adults all over the world, to clearly understand that everybody has a role to play in society, regardless of their sex.

The TEDx talk in 2013 clearly gave me a reorientation on what feminism is and means, the book would help you see this ideology in the proper light.
