Beyonce Presents Award To Colin Kaepernick For Selfless Activism
Beyonce made a surprise appearance at the Sports Illustrated Awards to present the Muhammed Ali Legacy Award to Colin Kaepernick. The award is given to athletes who have used their platform to contribute immensely to the society.
In what she described as a “special night of appreciation especially for people of colour”, she gave a heartfelt thanks for his effort “to change perception, to change the way we treat each other, especially people of colour”.
Colin is infamously known across America as the first NFL player to kneel during the national anthem, as a form of protest against the oppression of people of colour, before the start of the game.
While receiving the award at the Barclays Centre in New York, Colin said,
“I accept this award not for myself, but on behalf of the people, because if it were not for my love of the people, I would not have protested. And if it was not for the support from the people, I would not be on this stage today. With or without the NFL’s platform, I will continue to work for the people because my platform is the people.”
Thank you very much to Sports Illustrated for the honor of the Muhammad Ali Legacy Award. I am humbled and honored to share this with the people.
