Banksy Painting Renamed. Mysterious Buyer Still Paying For Shredded Painting
A few days ago, a shocking stunt was pulled just after a painting worth £1,042,000 (N500.6m) was purchased at an auction in Sotheby’s. A painting that had just been bid for and successfully sold, shredded itself.
The stunt was pulled by the unknown Banksy, who embedded a shredder in the painting, ‘Girl with Balloon.’
At the time it was unsure what will transpire after the painting had been shredded.
The buyer, a woman who bought the painting is paying and keeping the painting despite the condition of the painting.
Sotheby’s have stated that the price will be paid in full by the new owner.
The firm representing the mystery artist Banksy has renamed the painting Love is in the Bin.
The European woman who purchased the painting, who wishes to remain anonymous stated: “At first I was shocked, but I realised I would end up with my own piece of art history.”
The art world is still speculating on the incident that happened on Friday when just moments after the hammer was hit to announce the sale of the painting the shredder built into the painting shredded the canvas.
Nobody is certain how the shredder was triggered but an Instagram post showing the moment the canvas was shredded with the buyers expressing shock was posted by the elusive artist.
Sotheby’s head of contemporary art, Alex Branczik, said the auction house was “pleased to confirm the sale of the artist’s newly-titled Love is in the Bin, the first artwork in history to have been created live during an auction”.
The shredded painting now named ‘Love is in the Bin’ will be displayed to the public at Sotheby’s over the weekend.
The buyer of the painting has not been revealed by Sotheby’s, they only stated that she is a “long-standing client of Sotheby’s”.
