LASG pledges to implement policy on women’s economic empowerment

Lagos State Government has said that it will fully domesticate and implement the National Women’s Economic Empowerment Policy, (WEE), as part of its strategic intervention to improve the lot of women and girls in the state.

The state’s Commissioner for Women Affairs, Cecilia Bolaji-Dada, gave the promise when a delegation from the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) and the development Research and Projects Centre (dRPC) paid a follow-up visit to the state on the implementation of the guidelines set up to domesticate the WEE policy.

She said the state had set up a nine-man committee to effectively drive the implementation process of the policy.


According to a communique by the Director, Partnerships Development and Communication, dRPC, Hassan Karofi, the setting up of the committee is a show of commitment by the state government.

Bolaji-Dada also said that the selection of the state as one of the cohorts at the sub-national level was in line with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision for gender inclusion and economic empowerment of all residents in the state.

Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Yemi Kalesanwo, also assured of the state’s unwavering commitment to domesticating the policy.

She said the state is fully dedicated to domesticating the policy, with the ultimate goal of significantly improving the lives and livelihoods of women in the state.

Director-General, NIPPS, Prof. Ayo Omotayo, disclosed that the visit was a follow-up advocacy engagement to discuss the implementation of actionable steps towards the adoption, domestication, and implementation of the WEE policy at the state level.

Also speaking, Director of Projects, dRPC, Dr Stanley Ukpai, commended the Lagos State government for its innovative governance and inclusive approach to development.
