Nigeria Police Force on Saturday announced the deaths of two officers deployed to Imo State.

The force said its officers had been killed in an attack suspected to have been carried out by members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

“Our men attacked and killed by suspected IPOB members in Imo today. May their souls rest in peace,” Olumuyiwa Adejobi, police spokesperson disclosed in a statement.

Adejobi revealed that the officers were coducting a routine patrol in Garki Okigwe when they were ambushed.

He also noted that the attackers “used dynamite on them,” but he did not give further details of the numbers or names of the affected officers.

The spokesperson also addressed growing criticism regarding police handling of the current security challenges disturbing the country, stating, “I wonder how someone would allege that we don’t tackle security challenges in Nigeria. If not, how and how do we die? That’s the question.”

The development comes a day after the factional leader of the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), Simon Ekpa, was declared wanted by the Defense Headquarters in Abuja for terrorism.

Ekpa, from his base in Finlad, declared the famous Monday sit-at-home in all five Southeast states at different times to protest the release of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, who said he is not in support of violence in the region.

The military released Ekpa’s name on its red list of wanted individuals, along with the names of 96 other individuals nationwide, on Friday.
