I’m not under pressure to deliver as Super Eagles coach, says Finidi

Finidi George has said he is not under pressure to perform as Super Eagles head coach.

Finidi was officially unveiled as Eagles’ new coach on Monday, 13 May 2024 in Abuja.

Present at the unveiling ceremony were Sports Minister John Enoh, NFF president Ibrahim Gusau, NFF Secretary General Mohammed Sanusi and also other top officials of the football body.

Fielding questions from journalists after the unveiling, Finidi said, although, he is a quiet person but he is not afraid of anything.


“The worst you can get in football is not getting the result and the best you can get is winning all the time,” he said.

“I will try my best to make sure the team functions properly and we start winning games. So in terms of pressure I don’t think I have it, I have a tough skin.”

Finidi’s first assignment as Eagles coach is the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic in June.

The Eagles are third in Group C on two points after draws against Lesotho and Zimbabwe.


The former Enyimba coach spoke about his target for the Eagles.

“My first target is to make sure we are in line to qualify for the World Cup and AFCON 2025 qualifiers will be coming up soon but the major target for me is the qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic.

“We will do everything to win against South Africa and Benin Republic and with that we will set the tone.”

Meanwhile, Finidi will be assisted by his former Eagles teammate Daniel Amokachi.

Olatunji Baruwa, who was goalkeeper trainer under Jose Peseiro, keeps his position.
