Barely two days after the police high command launched a major onslaught against kidnappers and bandits in the Abuja general area, unknown gunmen have reportedly invaded the Army Post Housing Estate in Kurudu, outskirts of FCT, abducting two persons.

Kurudu is one of the communities on the outskirts of Abuja, which shares a boundary with Nassarawa State.

Police have kept mute over the incident, however, a source around Karshi Road, told The Guardian that security in the estate has disallowed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Kurudu access to the estate, which houses a mixture of civilian and retired personnel of the army.

Spokesperson of police in FCT, Josephine Adeh had declined comment on the incident, urging newsmen to contact the army on the issue.

A source at the Guards Brigade, the major protectors of the seat of power and the president, also declined comment on the issue.

The incident, which reportedly happened at about 10:00 pm in the Phase 2 area of the estate on Thursday, had gunmen who came into the estate and took away two residents.

With the launch of a Special Intervention Squad (SIS) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to address the increasing spate of insecurity in Nigeria and Abuja, residents thought that the end of the kidnapping spree had come.

Abuja had been highly unsettled following widespread insecurity around some outskirts, characterized by frequent and indiscriminate kidnapping of persons.

Kidnappers, who abducted ten people from Sagwari Estate Layout at Dutse in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on January 7, 2024, had reportedly killed two more of the abductees to send a strong warning to their relatives negotiating ransom payment.

The bandits reportedly increased their demand from the initial N60 million per person to N100 million, now totalling N700 million.
