In order to fly to another country, what is it that you need? You need the proper identification, traveling documents, luggage and anything of necessity that you may need when you get to your destination.

The journey of life is similar to traveling. In order to get to your destination, you will first embark on a journey. Depending on the destination some journeys take longer than others.

But there are certain things you need in order to reach your destination. Consider the journey a process.

You cannot get the job of your dreams without first going through the interview process; even with that you still need perhaps a higher degree, work experience, recommendations and more.

We are so preoccupied with the destination that we forget there is a process, a journey and few things that are required of us.

You will not be able to assume your rightful position if you ignore what is needed or refuse to do the necessary work.

One does not wake the next day and become successful. Success is the culmination of purposeful and Divinely led actions.

Have you ever noticed that there are people who arrive at their destination but cannot maintain it?

They do not have the emotional or mental capacity to navigate it, or perhaps they arrive at their destination whether it is a position, a promotion, a new location and it is engulfed in chaos.

As you embark on your journey, remember that there are certain fundamental building blocks and requirements in order to reach your destination.

Do not forget the importance of good character, integrity, having a moral compass and being anchored in something greater than yourself.

This process does not only entail what you need to have down on paper, but what you need to have within to get to the next level of life.

Ask Dr. YetundeHi, my name is Marie and I hope you can help me with this. Should I leave my corporate job to set up my own business in digital marketing and design?

I have realised that I am very good at creating logos and other marketing design materials.

I have found a small clientele in my friends and extended network to the point where I am considering leaving my full-time job to focus solely on this.

My question is do you think it is advisable to leave one’s job to pursue a passion project/prospective business idea? I need your help!
Marie

Hi Marie. Thanks for your question. I am happy that you have discovered something you are good at and that has provided some form of service to your friends and extended network.

There are a couple of things I want you to think about: do you have financial responsibilities that require you to work? Is your job the only source of your main income? Will you be able to survive financially if you walk away from your job?

After you have taken the time to assess and think about those questions, you can now start to think about the next steps.

If your answer was yes, that leaving your job will significantly impact you, then you might want to start viewing your job in another light.

People who are unable to leave their 9 to 5 job initially to focus on their business should view their job as an investment tool into their entrepreneurial pursuit.

Use the funds that you make from your job to invest in yourself and your new venture. Re-prioritize your time where you dedicate certain hours per day to build your business.

Once you have built your business to a point where you are seeing a stable stream of income, then you can fully walk away.

View your career as your own personal investment and as a kick- starter in your entrepreneurial pursuits.

Once you have created a strong foundation then you can focus solely on your business.

If you put in the amount of time necessary to build your business, then you will get to the point where you are comfortable enough to focus 100 per cent on it. Until then my advice is that you balance the two.
