The American Women’s Club held a celebration recently at EVE Restaurant, Victoria Island to highlight its achievements in their 55 years of existence. The event welcomed new members, returning members and their guests.

The American Women’s Club (TAWC) in Lagos is an organisation that has been around since 1961 in Nigeria and was founded by expatriate American women who found themselves in Nigeria. Its main aim is to synergise, network, create a soft landing and above all embrace and give goodwill in their immediate community, thereby impacting the country positively and leaving the country better than they met it.

Entertainment came from opera singer Ranti Ihimoyan and spoken word by Titilope Sonuga. Special acknowledgment was given to returning members Sarah Boulous, founder Society of Performing Arts in Nigeria (SPAN) and Ifeoma Fafunwa, Director and Producer Hear Word! Appreciation was given to many companies that donated items for the auction used to raise money for charities. And with over 4,000 Nigerian scholarship recipients in its 55 years of existence, main attraction of the celebration was hearing testimonials from the scholars in person and via letters read by members throughout the audience.

A case in study was a young man who used to be a security guard but is now a practising lawyer, due to the scholarship scheme of The American Women’s Club. The keynote speaker at the event was Mrs Nike Ogunlesi, CRO Ruff and Tumble and other key members of the club who were in attendance include Mrs. Patrenia Werts Onuoha- President, Mrs Doris Elaine Fafunwa – Lifetime Member, Mrs. Jameelah Sharrieff-Ayedun – 1st Ambassador, Mrs. Margaret Anyinbo – Chairman Scholarship Committee, Lola Johnson, Bola Fashola, Omolayo Badru, Queen Ahneva, Fatimata Kamara, Tunde Okeremi, Ejieke Ezeadiugwu, Ugochi Asinugo among others.

From publishing books such as Lagos Easy Access (LEA), raising millions for charitable organizations, giving hours of in kind service to schools, hospitals, orphanages and more, and giving scholarships to over 4,000 Nigerian individuals who are now doing well in their different endeavours, the aim of TAWC is to be able to have even more future success stories to share about Nigeria. It is open to welcome more members and donors and can be contacted at communications@theawclagos.com.

It was an eventful 55th-year celebration!
