Recently the Save Our Women and Girls Foundation (SOWandG) held a programme in commemoration of this year’s International Women’s Day with theme ‘Press Forward.’

According to the convener of the programme, Ambassador Uyime-Ivy King, the foundation, which is not-for-profit organisation, was incorporated in late 2016 with focus on creating social development awareness on issues that concern women and girls.

According to King, “the idea behind this event is to come together as women to challenge one another to collaborate and empower our sense of mental empowerment. We can learn from one another and to also highlight the challenges that keep us together.”

She continued, “as someone who works on a foundation for women and girls, I always set aside this day to celebrate women.”

She said, “we may be denied some rights that we feel belong to us but we have to keep pushing and doing the best we can until we succeed.

“I have encountered women that limit themselves and have this mindset that some things are out of their reach for them, so we need to keep on challenging them so that they can change their thinking.”

For instance, last year, “we trained we trained over 900 women in Akwa Ibom skills acquisition and one of the women in jewelry making section was so good they selected her work to an exhibition at New York, America, so the idea is we may not be able to save everybody but we may be able to impact women who will, in turn, empower others.”
