The International Women’s Society, (IWS), last weekend held a special event tagged, “Mother/Daughter Meet and Greet” to mark the International Mother’s Day in Lagos.

The event, which held at the Coral Hall, Pinky Blue Mall, was in recognition of all mothers and to appreciate their sacrifice, selflessness and tireless dedication. A well-attended event, most members turned up with their biological daughters to celebrate, whilst others attended with their stand-in daughters and mentees. The idea behind this initiative was to foster special bonding between older and younger members and to use it as one of the possible platforms of attracting membership.

The high point of the day was the special induction ceremony that saw five qualified prospects joining the society; notably amongst them, Joke Oshodi-Olasukanmi, the Director of NGOs of the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

Speaking at the event, the president of IWS, Abimbola Ademola-Bawaallah enjoined the newly inducted members to bring their know-how and spirit of service to the table for the collective benefit of humanity. Another important feature of the show was the talk on Endometriosis by Dr Ajayi of the Nordica Fertility Centre. Describing endometriosis as the abnormal growth of cells (endometrial cells) similar to those that form the inside of the uterus, Ajayi said they usually grow outside of the uterus and are most commonly found on other organs of the pelvis.

Adding that the exact cause of endometriosis has not been identified, she revealed that it is one of the leading causes of infertility and severe pain during menstrual period, intercourse, bowel movements and urination. She added that there was treatment for the disease and urged women to get themselves checked.

Efik dancers thrilled members and guests to a scintillating dance performance as they wined and dined. According to Ademola-Bawaallah, the event is one of the ways in which IWS reaches out to community and humanity in its service for the common good.
