Here we go again!
Even though it was a surprise, it was turning out to be my dream wedding. Fortunately, Tosin and Onyeka remembered all the vendors I had shortlisted for the wedding previously ,and so they had all been contacted.
I walked into the hall and down the aisle with my father. The flowers were the same ones I had selected. The cake, the décor, the music, the photographer….it was all as I had imagined except for the thousands of people that should have attended. I wanted it this way, even though I had pangs of guilt because my mother was missing in action and so were Tunji’s parents.
My father walked me down the aisle and handed me over to Tunji who was all smiles.
The minister began the customary preamble, I was floating in the euphoria of it all until he got to this part, and I believe it went something like this;
“If any of you knows a reason why these two should not be joined in holy matrimony, let him speak now or forever hold his peace”.
Just then, the doors opened and I saw my mother rush in, followed closely behind by Tunji’s mother.
“What’s going on here”? I whispered to Tunji.
He ignored my question and spoke to the minister instead.
“Please carry on sir.” Tunji said.
The minister cleared his throat and tried to speak, but my mother’s voice bellowed down the hall interrupting him.
“What is the meaning of this? So I was supposed to miss my only daughter’s wedding ehn”? She shouted wagging a finger at my father.
I sighed in relief, at least it was my father she was accusing and not me.
“Go on sir” Tunji prompted the minister again.
The minister tried to speak again, but this time it was Tunji’s mother that interrupted him.
“Hold it there”! She roared
….to be continued.
