Funto Ibuoye is a young and dynamic Nigerian Author and Chartered Accountant. A graduate of Accounting from Covenant University, she authored her first book ‘Beautified’ in August 2013 and her second book- ‘The 31 Woman’ in July 2015.

Funto is passionate about nation building and helping women live up to their full potential. She strongly believes that the empowered woman is one of the greatest assets of a thriving society/nation. She is the founder of The Beautified Network, a for-purpose initiative that is focused on enabling women discover and live in the fullness of their God given purposes.

In this interview, she discusses with Guardian Woman the purpose of Becoming Conference and what participants stand to gain.

Of what essence is Becoming conference to an average woman in the present-day Nigeria?
The essence of Becoming Conference to the average woman in the present day Nigeria is to inspire her to unlock the hidden potential inside of her in order to provide solutions to the problem she was created to solve and Nigeria obviously has a lot of problems to be solved; that the average woman is inspired to ‘become’ someone who is capable of proffering solutions to national and even global problems as she listens and learns from the real stories of women who have gone ahead and  ‘become’ regardless of the challenges they faced.

What are the inspirations behind the conference?
The major inspiration behind the conference is the burning desire to see young women rise and live up to their full potential as they contribute their quota to transforming their society and the world at large.

Apart from the inner beauty of a woman, what do you think are also essential in making an ideal woman?
Knowing who she is and understanding her worth are major essentials of an ideal woman.  I believe that a woman who truly knows who she is, knows she was created for a purpose and understands the value she carries is a woman who is unstoppable.

You gave up your career as a chartered accountant to pursue something else. Would you say the experience has worth it? Are you happy with that choice?
Yes!! Totally worth it! Funny enough, I loved Accounting in school, I enjoyed working with figures and all but I actually got bored working as an Accountant- doing the same things day in, day out. I’m very creative and I like to be up and about most of the time but a career in accounting doesn’t really allow that. I switched to Marketing/Brand management and I don’t regret it at all even though I’m currently transitioning to entrepreneurship as an Interior Designer.

You are involved with LACE and The Beautified Network; you also have a day job and a family to cater for, how do you juggle all of these?
I get asked this question a lot and honestly, I’d say it’s been grace. I believe I’ve been graced to do all that I do that it comes so natural. Also, knowing my priorities and understanding the things that require my attention per time helps a lot in juggling it all. It hasn’t actually been so easy, matter of fact, it has been really stretching but then I realize that the further I’m stretched, the stronger I become.

You once remarked that “to have a beautiful marriage requires a lot of dying to self.” How much of this philosophy has helped you in your marital life? Is this a part of the values shared with others through The Beautified Network?

One of my best scriptures for marriage is 1st Corinthians 7: 4 in the Message Version- Marriage is not a place to “stand up for your rights.” Marriage is a decision to serve the other, whether in bed or out.

For me, marriage is about service and to serve requires that you die to yourself- die to your pride; die to your ego; die to wanting to have your way all the time. Understanding this has really helped me grow and mature in my marriage; hence a lot of unnecessary arguments have been avoided.
Yes, this is a major value we try portray at the Becoming Conference by choosing speakers who are not only successful in the market place but also have successful marriages and homes.

What other values should participants at the conference expect?
Excellence is a major value we showcase through the conference; from the ambiance to the content and event flow. I’d rather not do anything if I won’t do it excellently. That’s how I live my life and I believe God expects us to live a life of excellence in all ramifications.

What are your expectations of the Becoming 2.0 Conference?
My expectation for Becoming2.0 is that every woman who would attend the conference would leave with a clearer understanding of who she truly is and what purpose she was created for and after the conference, she will go ahead and become all she was created for, living her life to the fullest.
