A pro-Yoruba group, O’odua Nationalist Coalition (ONAC) has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to direct the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase to organized public inquiry into the unrest and arms proliferation in the riverine area of Ondo state.
ONAC at a press briefing yesterday by its Director of Pubic Affairs, Dr Akinwunmi Oriola, said only a public inquiry by the police would put an end to the unending insecurity of lives and property in Ilaje Local Government Area of the state.
He traced the genesis of the crisis in the area to the ascendance to the throne of a traditional ruler in the area who had been sponsoring armed attacks on “the peace loving people of Igbokoda”
The group also called on the Federal Government to mop-up arms in the hands of non-state actors with detailed emphasis on “Ilajeland and Igbokoda” saying this action would go a long way in restoring peace to the areas
Oriola who noted that several lives have been lost since the hostility began in the area, said, “In this ceaseless hostilities, not less than six people have been hacked to death. Two of those killed are members of ONAC in Igbokoda”
He alleged that the traditional ruler stationed armed thugs at Igbokoda, which is not his domain from where he ruled his people adding that in the process, he forcefully sent packing the legitimate traditional ruler of Igbokoda, the Olu of Igbokoda, Oba Afolabi Oladimeji Odidiomo
He added that the traditional ruler has also used his armed thugs in collaboration with some security agents launched violent campaign of vengeance against his perceived enemies
Oriola said the President should come to the aid of the people of the area by ensuring that law and order is restored and the traditional ruler stopped from continuing his war against innocent people
