Four die in Bauchi in another stampede incident

Four people have lost their lives in a stampede on Sunday in Bauchi State during an almsgiving zakat exercise for the poor.


It was gathered that the stampede happened at the Shafa Holdings Company plc headquarters along Jos Road, at about 10am.

A 17-year-old named Naima Abdullahi, is currently receiving medical treatment at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital in Bauchi.

The Police spokesperson in Bauchi, Ahmed Wakili, confirmed the incident but said the situation is currently stable.


Wakili said the police acted swiftly upon hearing the news, while the Commissioner of Police in the state encouraged the public to stay composed.

The stampede in Bauchi is coming on the after a similar incident that happened where two female students of the Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK) lost their lives on Friday, 22 March, 2024.

The deceased were among people struggling for rice meant to be distributed as palliative by the state government.


The stampede happened at the institution’s Convocation Square venue of the distribution.

Also in February, seven people reportedly died in a stampede that occurred during the distribution of seized bags of rice by the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) in Lagos.
