Ferry operator debunks alleged land grab in Lekki

Director of Lekki Estate Ferry Terminal, Hakeem Alobo Bakare, has debunked claims that he is a land grabber, who ordered the invasion of a parcel of land in the Lekki area of Lagos State.

Recall that Lekki Residents Association (LERA), Lekki Phase One, in Eti-Osa Local Council, had, through its chairman, Yomi Idowu, raised an alarm that suspected land grabbers, in the company of uniformed men, last week, invaded a parcel of land along Admiralty Way, Lekki Peninsula Scheme 1, Lekki, Lagos.

The association claimed that the Lagos State government had allocated the land to residents since September 7, 2006. Reacting, Bakare, who is also the Director, Lekki Reminiscence Limited, said the state government allocated the said portion of land to his firm.

He said that he applied to the state government for a parcel of land on Admiralty Way, two years ago, to set up a ferry terminal to complement the one at Falomo, to ease transportation challenges for Lagosians in that axis.

He said: “The governor approved it. We went through different stages, from his office to the Ministry of Transport, the Land Bureau, the office of Public Private Partnerships (PPP), to the Surveyor-General’s office.

“At the end of the day, a concession agreement was drafted by the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General of Lagos State.” Bakare explained that the state government also decided that the State Waterways Authority (LASWA) would represent the interest of the state in the project.
