The Veterinary Council of Nigeria has appealed to state governments to embrace the international standard in building abattoirs in their various states, to ensure that only healthy animals are given out to the public for consumption.

Chairman of the body’s continuing education, Prof. Gabriel T. Ogundipe, stated this in Yola, at a one-day refresher seminar organised by the council to educate its members on modern techniques of detecting diseases in animals.

Ogundipe, who spoke on the theme: ‘Sustainable Veterinary Control System For Livestock And Livestock Products In Nigeria,’ said if government, at both federal and states properly harness the sector, the revenue that will be generated will surpass what is generated from the oil sector.

“We are sitting on gold and yet we are complaining of lack of resources because we all focus only on oil and abandon other sectors like livestock, which is more viable in terms of revenue generation. The monthly revenue Nigeria will generate from export of animal skin alone will take care of salaries of the entire country, not to talk about the meat and other by products that come from animals,” he stated.

He urged Governor Mohammad Umaru Bindow, to upgrade the state capital abattoir, which was build during the days of defunct Gongola State to an international standard abattoir, to avoid meat related diseases in the state and also reconstruct the veterinary clinic to meet the international standard.
