Provost, Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology (FCFMT), Lagos, Capt. Sule Yussuf, has charged the newly matriculated students to keep away from social vices and activities that are capable of negating their academic goals.

Yussuf who spoke shortly after administering the oath on national and higher national diploma students enjoined them to abide by the rules, so as not to stay beyond two-years for their various programmes.

He said the college initially has a mandate as a training school to address the Nigerian marine and fishing sector, as well as the manpower requirements.

“But in 1992 the institution was upgraded into full-fledge technological institution under the supervision of the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN).”

He added that government has been fully supporting the college to achieve its set goals in the area of infrastructural upgrade, modern teaching facilities and academic programmes.

“The college is fully accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) to run programmes in Fisheries Technology, Marine Engineering, Nautical Science, Horticulture, Industrial and Labour Studies, Maritime Transport and Business Studies.

On the recommendation of NBTE, the entrepreneurship department trains all students in the area of manpower development and self sufficiency.”

To the freshmen he said, “Your success and quick turnaround in the college will depend on your seriousness, keeping to rules and regulations, limited extra-curricular activities like negative social media and cultism which have kept students beyond their regular two years.

Imbibe good character and be a good ambassador of your parents and this great college.”

On his part, the governing board chairman, Abdulmalik Usman, admonished them to keep away from all vices that can be detrimental to them as an individual and to national development.
