Security experts harp on safety in schools
To address insecurity issues and promote students’ well being in schools, the National Department for School Safety (NIDSS) has called on stakeholders to incorporate safety in the school curriculum.
Managing Director, MYK Crime Control Services, Dayo Oshinmakinwa, said the initiative is to address insecurity issues in schools following the recent cases of kidnapping in schools and also to help children develop safety culture habits.
Oshinmakinwa who also shed some light on the planned Safe School Week 2018, titled ‘School safety: A shared responsibility’, said the campaign would hold between October 8 and 12 at Police College, Ikeja.
He lamented that perpetrators of the evil act are usually relatives or family friends, hence the need to educate the children on safety acumen.
While pointing out that the initiative is targeted at primary and secondary school students, Oshinmakinwa said teaching students defence mechanism and creating a conducive centre for learning should be placed as priority in formal education.
“We want to train children to be security conscious. Hence, the initiative week will include stakeholders sharing ideas and policies that can promote safety in schools.
“We are looking at vision 2050. There will be connectivity in all schools such that by the press of a button in a school, it alerts the police station about a state of emergency.”
