robbersTHE Lagos State Government enhanced security outfit, ‘Rapid Response Squad’ (RRS) of Lagos State Police Command ha apprehended two suspected notorious armed robbers, who specialised in robbing motorists on traffic.

The alleged suspect, Tijani Taofeek, 26 years old, is a member of traffic robbery syndicate at Ojota, a Lagos suburb.

The Police officers from the RRS acted on complaints from motorists and pedestrians, who have been victims of the robbers.

The suspect was caught in the act while trying to rob an articulated truck (trailer) driver at about 6pm in Ojota.

“An RRS motorbike rider, who was on patrol around the axis, was informed by a commercial driver from the other side of the road, that two suspected armed robbers were making effort to snatch handset from a trailer driver.

The suspect, who hails from Ogbomosho in Oyo state, said that he was a Bus conductor, and that the income from bus conducting operation was no longer enough for him.

“I told my Oga (Boss) that I would not come to work today because I was sick. But while at home, I could not hold on to hunger any longer and I went out to look for what to eat. I was not the only one, my friend has taken to his heels,” he confessed.

However, the Police recovered from him the handset, which he forcefully collected from the driver.

Police investigation revealed that a group of social miscreants are in the habit of robbing, snatching handsets and dispossessing law-abiding citizens of their valuables during the traffic snarls in Ojota and its environs.

The RRS Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Olatunji Disu, who confirmed the arrest said his bosses – the Governor of Lagos State and Lagos State Police Commissioner – will not tolerate any act of criminal activity in the state.

He said: “Following the regular complaints from members of the public of an increase in the frequency of traffic robbery along this axis and the mandate of the governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode to rid the metropolis of crimes, the state Commissioner of Police, CP Fatai Owoseni, ordered that immediate and drastic actions be taken in arresting the situation, which has started yielding positive results,” Disu said.

He urged the public to cooperate with the Police to reduce crimes, because, according to him, the Police cannot do it alone.
