The National Universities Commission (NUC) has urged investors interested in setting up universities to first weigh the implications comprehensively, before taking the step as, “The enterprise is clearly not for the faint-hearted.”

According to the executive secretary of the commission, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, this is important because the challenges of setting up private universities were daunting.

Rasheed spoke at the maiden convocation of Gregory University Uturu (GUU), Abia State, which 72 pioneer students graduated. Four of the graduands finished in the First Class Division, 26 in Second Class (Upper Division) and 31 in the lower division of the same class. Eleven students got third class degrees.

Represented by a director in the agency, Mrs. Constance Goddy-Nnadi, Rasheed saluted the courage and relentless efforts of the Founder/Chancellor of GUU, Dr. Gregory Ibe, saying that “his dream that translated Gregory University into what it has grown to be shortly, is one that NUC would want replicated across the country, to cater for the teeming number of young people who are desirous of higher education particularly university education.”

The NUC boss said Ibe has been at the vanguard of this cause, with the driving force being always to provide young people with a conducive learning atmosphere in GUU.

Vice-chancellor of the school, Prof. Juliet Elu, in her remarks said: “As graduates of this institution, you have been moulded into global citizens who are dependable, committed leaders and ambassadors of our great country. Do not leave your fate to others. You can contribute to Nigeria’s capital and character, you must show love, kindness and care to those around you.

She added, “Continue to use your leadership skills in organising alumnus chapters around the country, refer prospective students to GUU, recommend and help other alumni to get employment, keep in touch with GUU, share your experience with those that are yet to graduate and mentor them, give back something to your alma mater, patronise its enterprises and contribute to its growth and development.”

Visitor to the institution and Abia State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, who was installed at the ceremony, commended the university for being in the league of private universities that are doing well and overtly making great successes.

He was represented by his deputy, Ude Oko Chukwu, at the event, where Miss Uzoamaka Yvette Chika, of English/ Literary Studies Department, emerged the overall best best.

Vice President of Liberia, Joseph Nymah Boakai, represented by the Liberian Ambassador to Nigeria, Prof. Alhassan Conte, Chief Executive Officer of Star Times Nigeria, Dr Jack Liu Jinguan, and Chairman, Skill “G” Group Nigeria Ltd, Dr Moshe Moalam, were conferred with honorary doctorate degrees of the university.
