To improve proficiency in English language among students, a non-governmental organisation, the English Dictionary Project (EDP), has donated free dictionaries to senior secondary students of Sanya Senior Grammar School.

According to the Project Coordinator, Ms. Kofoworola Bada, the EDP initiative is designed to synergise with English language teachers and devise means of helping their students better their performance in the subject.

She said the overall aim was to, among others, ensure that public school students have access to personal dictionaries, a development she said would go a long way in improving their learning experience.

She said, “So far, we have visited eight schools and the feedback has been a bit encouraging. The teachers are helping to ensure that students make good use of their dictionaries. We also try to set up Dictionary Clubs in these schools but we haven’t been able to accomplish that in all the schools we have visited.

“We intend to reach out to students spread across other states, because we discovered that there are so many students who do not have personal dictionaries. But one of the peculiar challenges associated with this project is limited funds. So far, the EDP has enjoyed the support and goodwill of mostly young individuals, and we hope that organisations, governments and corporate bodies will come on board to support us in getting more dictionaries. There are still lots of schools that we need to reach out to.”

Vice principal in charge of academics at the benefiting school, Mrs. Victoria Ajoko, commended the EDP initiative, which she said would improve students’ performance in the long run.

She said, “Some parents cannot afford to buy all the required textbooks for their wards, let alone a dictionary. And so this project no doubt would be priceless to the students and their parents.

“The performance of students in English Language has not been very encouraging because of some societal challenges arising from inability of parents to buy recommended textbooks for their children.

Clearly, this dictionary will go a long way to help our students because it will assist them in learning the subject effectively in terms of spelling, grammar, idiomatic expressions, figures of speech and definition of words.
