• IGP makes proposal for better use of CCTV cameras

Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, is proposing a legislation that would make installation of CCTV cameras part of approval plan for public buildings like supermarkets and housing estates, stressing that such measures remain the best way to police the nation’s space.

The IGP said that the Nigerian Police Force is working to migrate from analogue to digital technology knowing that that is the best way that the force can go.

Speaking when the Executive Vice-Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Prof Umar Danbatta visited him yesterday in Abuja, Arase noted that the numeric strength of the force is not enough to police the country’s security space as the Nigerian Police have only 317,000 personnel in its workforce.

He observed that modern policing is predicated on technology adding that since he assumed duty, he has been trying to migrate from analogue to digital technology.

According to him, “there is no way we can be everywhere and you will also recall too that we are in the forefront of fighting the ZHT product that we burst because as the president said if we are going to fight crime you must be able to put the police on a technological platform that will be able to match our effectiveness and since I came board the first thing I did is to make sure that the police is accountable to the public they serve because I know that we cannot do it alone.”

He said: “I am excited at what you are doing, we shall key into it like the issue of kidnapping for example, is one area where this GSM has really aided the system. And with what you are doing and our principal stand on the MTN platform was such that we cannot allow things like this degenerate in our country because there is no country in the world where you pick up a SIM card without registering it, as people must know this thing and how it works.”

Apart from the people who are benefitting from selling this card they also pay tax to the country.
