Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has commended the efforts of the president, council and members of Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) towards developing, sustaining and advancing the cause of PR practice in the face of daunting challenges that confront the practice.

He spoke through the Director of Press and Protocol in the ministry, Mr. Timothy Oyedeji, at the 2018 National Conference/Annual General Meeting of the institute held recently in Umuahia, Abia State.

He stated that the advent and evolution of social media has placed the power of communications in the hands of many individuals, who lack the maturity and skills to handle news and information materials.

According to him, “Some commentators on social media have now made it their fulltime job to twist the remarks and comments made by public officials in order to malign those officials or cast aspersions on them. We are not unaware that this hatchet job has scaled up in view of the forthcoming general elections.”

He said the theme of the conference ‘Sustainable Development in a Fragile Economy: the PR Perspective” came at an auspicious time, when President Buhari’s administration is committed towards revamping the economy and returning it to the path of growth and sustainability.

While declaring the conference open at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia, on behalf of the state governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Eme Okoro, urged the conferees to consider the state government’s programme and activities in all sectors and suggest how to substain them more effectively.
