Woman decries husband’s continuous detention despite bail order

A house wife, Mrs Deborah Akorede, has written a petition to the National Judicial Commission (NJC), over the continuous detention of her husband, Yusuf Akorede, at the Ikoyi Prison, despite that the court has granted him bail.She said her husband has been languishing in the prison  “since August 8, 2017, when he was taken to court and was arraigned allegation of stealing by the complainant, Esther Olufunmilayo” .

According to the letter, Akorede, who is an Estate Agent, is standing trial in at the federal high court, Lagos in suit No. FHC/258C/2017.She also said, she had written two letters to the NJC on the issue and was asked to accompany the letter with a verifying affidavit, which she had done and it has not brought about justice to her husband.“On August 8, 2017, when the matter first came up, there was no lawyer to appear for my husband because he did not know that he would be taken to court on that day. Then the matter was before Justice Abdul-Azeez Anka.

“That on August 24, my husband bail application was heard and there was no opposition to the bail.Justice Anka adjourned till September 26, a period of four weeks for ruling on the bail application that was heard,” she averred in an affidavit.Akorede also claimed that when she got to court on September 26, she learnt the matter had been transferred to Justice O. O. Oguntoyinbo and for twice when the matter came up,the police were not in court, until 21st of November.

It was then that Justice Oguntoyinbo said she would not hear the bail application until the police file their opposition to the bail application. The matter was later adjourned to another date and the police were not in court.The matter comes up June 20.
