Man, 18, bags 3 months for stealing phone in Ibadan.

An Iyaganku Magistrates' Court in Ibadan on Tuesday sentenced 18-year-old Taye Omotoso to three months imprisonment for stealing a mobile phone.

The Magistrate, Mrs Munirat Giwa-Babalola handed down the judgment after the convict pleaded guilty to the crime.

Giwa-Babalola, however, noted that the convict was a first-time offender and consequently granted him an option of N20, 000 fine in lieu of three months imprisonment.

Omotosho, a porter at the Bodija Market in Ibadan, was arraigned on a two-count charge of illegal entering of a residence and stealing.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Omotoso, a porter, who also sleeps in the market, had pleaded guilty to unlawful entering of a house at Arigidi area of Bodija and stealing a mobile phone.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Sgt. Olufemi Omilana told the court that Omotoso entered a house on Arigidi Street, Old Bodija, and stole a Nokia phone valued at N12, 000, property of Mr Paul Moses.

He said the offences were committed on Aug. 9 at noon at Arigidi Street, old Bodija.

“Paul Moses, a security guard, at Arigidi Street caught Omotoso inside the compound with a phone he had kept on the windowsill of his room.”

Omilana said the accused jumped over the fence into the compound and proceeded to the boys’ quarters where Moses resided.

The offences contravened Section 390 (9) and 412 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
