Legal luminaries commend Abugu, author of law books

MANY legal minds, including Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ade Ipaye, a former two-time minister, Mr. Dein Ajumoguobia SAN and other legal practitioners and law teachers of University of Lagos – Chief Ladi Taiwo, Dr. A.A. Olawoyin, Mr. Val Uche Obi and president, Aka Ikenga, Mr. Goddy Uwazuruike among others commended University of Lagos law teacher, Prof. Joseph E.O. Abugu, who launched two books, Principles of Corporate Law in Nigeria and Company Securities: Law and Practice (Second edition) last Thursday at MUSON Centre, Onikan, Lagos.

    Ajumuogobia, who stood in as interim chairman for Hon. Justice George A. Oguntade (rtd), said Nigeria was at an important stage of development and that the input of private sector players was key, as engine of development. 

    He said: “Abugu is perhaps more up-to-date in terms of being a teacher and practitioner of these two areas of commercial law practice and therefore adding more value to commercial law practice in Nigeria with his books. I commend the author for the two phenomenal books”.

    Deputy Vice Chancellors, Services, Prof. Duro Oni, who stood in for his colleague in Academics, Prof. Ide Alo, also praised Abugu for his dedication as an academic of distinction, “who not only teaches but is also able to do his research with commendable results”.

    On his part, Ipaye, who brought his boss, Governor Babatunde Fashola’s felicitations to the author, also traced his long-standing association with Abugu from their days together as teachers at University of Lagos. Ipaye noted: “The giant strides Abugu has taken haven’t been a fluke at all. It’s a combination of many years of study, hard work, critical thinking and writing; it’s not an easy task. They are two books on very critical areas of commercial law that are at the heart of Nigerian economy.

    “I commend teachers of commercial law who are here today, and whose efforts have helped to incubation what we are seeing today. The books make significant contribution not only to Nigeria but the Commonwealth as a whole”.

On Company Securities: Law and Practice, Abugu said the second edition “is designed to further deepen available literature on securities law and strengthen the case for its inclusion in the course curricula of our universities. Changes in the law of 2007 are brought up-to-date”. On Principles of Corporate Law in Nigeria, the author also said the book, “provide in-depth theoretical and practical insight of the subject to the law research either as a student or practitioner. It’s an effort to provide a composite exposition of Nigerian corporate law principles against the background of its rich English case law heritage and the Nigerian jurisprudence that have evolved over time”.
