Christian lawyers task Lagos CJ on corruption

Christian Lawyers Fellowship of Nigeria (CLASFON), has charged the Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Opeyemi Oke to take his anti-corruption war to the Probate Division, Sheriff and Bailiff Enforcement Unit.

The groups Sub Regional Coordinator, Prince Okey-Joe Onuakalusi made this charge during a courtesy visit to the chief judge.He commended her effort in the quest to ride the judiciary of corruption.

Onuakalusi told the CJ that the Sheriff and Bailiff Enforcement Unit needs her attention. “It is an open secret that this department of the judiciary cannot perform their primary duties without asking for gratification from litigants and counsel in one way or the other,” he said.

CLASFON also indicted the Probate Division, which he said is working with a 19th century attitude and mentality and in need of total overhaul.“The probate division is another important aspect in the administration and dispensation of justice in Lagos State. A visit to the department in all the judicial divisions shows that they are still working with a 19th century attitude and mentality. The department needs urgent and total overhaul.

“Shine your searchlight more on activities of Registrars and Sheriffs as they still promote corruption especially in the Magistrate Courts,” he advised.The group therefore urged the chief judge to discipline and recommend for retirement, judges and magistrates who are performing below required standard.

In her response, the CJ thanked CLASFON for the visit and reiterated her commitment to fight corruption, adding that she has noted the group’s advice. “I see myself as a tool in the hand of God. Whatever achievements have been made in the last three months, it is not me, but God at work,” she said, adding that she has acknowledged all the concerns raised by the Christian lawyers and charged them to report indiscipline or any erring member of the Bar or Bench who is found wanting.
