The Lagos State University (LASU) Students Union (LASUSU), has appealed to the management of the institution to review its decision to distance itself from the activities of the external commercial buses operating on campus under diverse monikers.

President of LASUSU, Tayo Sekoni, who made the appeal in an interview with The Guardian, noted that though the management’s decision was targeted at rebranding the image of the university, there was need for a rethink.

It would be recalled that authorities of the institution last week warned the students against associating with the affected transporters as failure to do so would attract sanctions.

The Acting Dean, Students Affairs Division of the school, Oluwafemi Obayori, who handed down the warning, said, any student who was interested in becoming a bus driver, should not bother coming to the university, adding that the university would not relent in its transformation agenda.

He said the decision became imperative owing to the incessant clashes between some students of LASU and operators of such vehicles.
But Sekoni told The Guardian that plans by the union to reform the operations of the external shuttles were afoot.

He added that the reform would benefit all LASU students and also eradicate all forms of rancour between the buss operators, the National Union of Road Transport Workers, and other relevant bodies.

He said, “I believe we have a reasonable management, if we inform them of the reform, and how it would benefit the students and entire LASU community, I’m sure they would reason with us. And so we are pleading and assuring the management that everything would be addressed under the new reformation exercise.”

Welfare Director of the union, Abisogun Akeen, who informed that the union has up to 30 buses operating in Lagos city, said the management’s decision if not harnessed would affect the welfare of the union.
He regretted that the management never informed or notified the leadership of LASUSU before taking its decision, adding, “thus we consider management’s decision to be an encroachment on the autonomy of the Students’ Union body.

“The buses generates revenue for the union and also aid students movement at subsidised price since LASU is a non-residential institution. Whenever we are going out on students’ activities, it helps us too. And so, we are pleading for their understanding…”
