Lagos CADP Trains 55 Women, Youth In Production

The Lagos State Commercial Agriculture Development Project (CADP) has trained 55 women and youths in three value chains of rice and poultry production and aquaculture.

The trainees were exposed to modern day farming techniques and how to commercialise their production in the weeklong training.

At the award of certificate ceremony for trainees, Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Olajide Basorun congratulated the participants, and stressed the need for them to make good use of the opportunity availed them through CADP.

Basorun said the rationale behind empowering women and youth who have passion for agriculture is to diversify the economy from over reliance on crude oil.

“Before, it used to be about crude oil. Now, agriculture is a business. In other climes, the richest people are farmers, and that is why we need to focus on the benefit we can derive from agricultural production. CADP was conceptualised to commercialise agriculture and shift from the hoe and cutlass farming,” he submitted.

State Project Coordinator, CADP, Mr. Kehinde Ogunyinka said the space for the first batch of the trainees was keenly contested by hundreds of candidates that applied. Of the lot, he said the 55 women and youth were chosen on merit and were certified to have passion for Agriculture.

He also stressed that CADP is k eying into the state and federal government’s plan to diversify the economy.

The Permanent secretary later presented certificates to the trainees. Each of the graduands would get seed funding from CADP.

Speaking on behalf of the participants, Jimoh Nurudeen expressed appreciation to the state governor, Akinwumi Ambode for his efforts to revitalise the agriculture sector of the state.
