Katsina State Government is to establish additional e-libraries as well as upgrade existing ones to make educational materials available to the public and promote reading culture among its people.

Governor Aminu Bello Masari explained that the measure is in addition to stocking the state’s public library with recommended textbooks for pupils and students.

Masari said textbooks worth N24 million would soon be procured for the state library for this purpose.

The governor stated this during the 2018 readership promotion campaign of the National Library of Nigeria (NLN) titled, “Sustaining lifelong reading for positive change.”

He said an e-library had been established in Daura to give more opportunities to online researchers and to meet up with the modern global trend of access to educational materials.

According to him, “Approval has also been granted for the upgrade of Katsina central e-library and plans are underway for the rehabilitation of the Malumfashi library, as well as establishment of an e-library.”

Masari also disclosed that funds would be provided to acquire sufficient, current and relevant materials for primary and secondary school libraries across the state.
Chief Executive Officer, NLN, Prof Lenrie Aina, called on Nigerians from all works of life, including pupils and students, to imbibe the culture of reading.

Aina called on school representatives, especially teachers as well as parents to “strive to read always to the admiration of the children. Parents should make books available to their children; to lavishly books as gifts to their children during special events of their lives such as birthdays, religious and cultural festivals.”
