RESIDENTS of Ishawo Road in Ikorodu West Local Government Area, Lagos, have made a passionate appeal to the State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode to come to their aid in repairing the ever-busy Ishawo road.

Ishawo road is a major access route that links the entire Ishawo community to the popular Ikorodu Expressway.

The road, according to some residents, was constructed many years ago and has remained in deplorable condition due to poor maintenance by the government.

A resident in the area, who identified himself simply as Kunle, said many people have lost their lives through accidents caused by the bad condition of the road.

According to him, whenever it rains, the road becomes impassable to both vehicles and those walking on foot. The most affected are motorists, who can remain in the traffic snarl for hours because of the appalling condition of the road.

Titi Odunayo, another resident in the area, described the road as ‘River Jordan’ because it is always flooded whenever there is rain and at times, the floods could trap people and have to be rescued with canoes.

Her words: “You need to see this road anytime it rains. You will weep for us who are living here. We are really tired and it is high time government turned their words to action and come to our aid to salvage this very popular road.”

John Okedo, a commercial motorcyclist, who uses the road daily, said they usually jerk up their charges during rainy seasons because of what they suffer on the road.

“Our customers complain about the extra charges during rainy season but we are not to be blamed for the extra charges because the bad roads often damage our motorcycles

“We don’t deliberately increase our charges. We consider the gross damage to our machine during such times, so we have to increase our fares so that we would be able to service our motorcycles,” he said.

Even market women selling their wares along the road also complained of low patronage as a result of the bad condition of the road.

They appealed to the governor to come to the place and do something about the road so that the residents can feel a sense of belonging and heave a sigh of relief.
