UNICEF spends N1.01bn on health initiatives in Jigawa

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) on Wednesday said it spent N1.013 billion on the provision of health and nutrition services in Jigawa within four years.

unicefThe United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) on Wednesday said it spent N1.013 billion on the provision of health and nutrition services in Jigawa within four years.

The UNICEF Chief Field Officer for Bauchi Zone, Mr Abdulai Kaikai, said this during a courtesy call on Gov. Muhammad Badaru in Dutse.

Kaikai said that the programme covered immunisation, maternal and child health as well as the treatment of more than 40,000 severely malnourished children in the state.

He said that UNICEF was committed to any project that would guarantee the well-being of children and mothers.

Kaikai also disclosed that his organisation expended N980 million to provide safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene services to 300,000 rural women and school children in the state.

According to him, UNICEF has earmarked $18 million to be expended on health and nutrition projects in the rural areas of Taraba, Zamfara, Niger and Jigawa.

In his remarks, Badaru thanked UNICEF for its support and pledged that his administration would cooperate with the organisation in the development of the state.

He also said his government would ensure that any project initiated by UNICEF in the state was sustained.
