NASFAT Agency for Zakat and Sadaqat (NAZAS) has partnered with the family of Adesoye to provide free medical services on prostrate cancer to 150 people in Lagos State.

During the free medical services on prostrate cancer in Lagos, the representative of the Adesoye Family, Otunba Ogungboyega, said the free screening and treatment was provoked by the circumstances surrounding the death of their relative, Oyebade Arasim Adesoye, from prostate cancer. The incident triggered the provision of free medical service on the disease to the public.

“We believed that many Nigerians might also die of the disease if they were not informed of its danger.”He said: “It is unfortunate that we lost my elder brother to prostate cancer and all efforts to cure him were fruitless. He was actually ignorant of the prostate cancer. At the initial stage, he was not aware of it and he was using the traditional medication. By the time he told us, we took him to the hospital, even up to London hospital, but it was too late.”Ogungboyega said that the family decided to partner with NASFAT in order to create awareness on the danger of prostate cancer.

“This is why we are partnering with NASFAT for people who have the same disease and are not aware of it to know through the screening. If anybody is having it, we can follow up,” he said.

NAZAS General Manager, Alhaji Sulaimon Akanni, encouraged other Nigerians and families to cater to the healthiness of others, saying it is a form of charity.“It is good to spend towards charity to make Nigeria better. Those who are healthy should remember those that are sick and provide for them. The family decided to sponsor this programme in order to sensitise Nigerians that prostate cancer is a silent killer, which if not well-managed can kill. In the family sponsoring this programme, a member was lost due to that prostate cancer after spending so much.

“150 beneficiaries are going to be screened and their health will be managed for them. We urge them to abide by medical advices,” he said.He urged every financially stable Muslims to endeavor to practice the third pillar of Islam by paying their zakat, which is part of being a Muslim.

The National Health Secretary of NASFAT, Dr. Abdulganiyu Salaudeen, enjoined men above 40 years to go for prostrate screening.“After the age of 45 years there is tendency for the prostrate gland in a man to enlarge. It is one of the most common types of cancer in men. Usually prostate cancer grows slowly and is initially confined to the prostate gland, where it may not cause serious harm. Some types of prostate cancer grow slowly and may need minimal or even no treatment, other types are aggressive and can spread quickly which will lead to emergency operation that will be done by an urologist.

He noted that the percentage of men suffering for prostrate cancer is on the increase. About 35-40 per cent of men population is suffering from the disease and that is why we are creating the awareness so that people can go for checkup and detect it early. He advised sexually active men to go for prostrate checkup from time to time. “If you engage in regular sex the chances of developing prostrate cancer is on the high side,” he said

A consultant Urologist, Dr. Saliu Abdulwaheed, said prostrate cancer is age related disease and it may not occur in some men.“The more age you become the higher the chance of having the disease. And it is not all the people that have the disease that will die,” he said.He advised Nigerians who are above 40 years to go for regular medical screening. “You should try to evaluate your prostrate gland by doing digital urethra evaluation by inserting your finger into your anus by an expert to feel the nature of the prostrate gland,” he said.
