A family of five persons was burnt to death yesterday morning as fire gutted a house in Lawanson area of Lagos State.

The victims – a grandmother, mother, father and two children — were sleeping when the fire started before dawn. Seeing the victims already burnt to ashes, the entire community went into mourning.

“It is an unfortunate incident. It is a very sad day in this area, a whole family roasted in overnight fire, this is sad,” an eyewitness said.

Besides the five victims, an unidentified man was also crushed to death while he was fast asleep under a mobile truck stationed at Sari Iganmu, Lagos.

Confirming the incident, Director of Fire Services in Lagos State, Rasaq Fadipe said both incidents happened early yesterday.

Fadipe said: “It was a tragedy. A family of five persons — father, mother, grandmother, a baby and a girl consumed by fire at No. 21 Michael Ogun Street, Obele, Lawanson.

“A man that slept under a truck was also crushed at Sari Iganmu in the midnight”, he confirmed via text messages.
