Plans are afoot to promote research among current students at the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), as some former students have proposed a multi-million naira research centre to the school’s management.

According to them, the facility to be named “ESUT Research Centre,” when completed, would motivate and link researchers to multiple choice resource materials, so as help broaden their knowledge on diverse issues.

Already they have formed a six-man committee headed by a senior lecturer in the Department of Sociology and anthropology, Mr. Amadi Aroh, to help pursue and source for funds for the project.

Former Students’ Director of Research, Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Ozor Ugonna Kingsley, who is the brain behind the project, told The Guardian that the centre would introduce core research ethics and practices aimed at improving research methods in the institution.

Estimated to cost over N150m, Ozor, who graduated a year ago, said the facility would, apart from other research materials also host an hour glass, unique cowries, atlas maps, books of records,
fossils, antiquities, artifacts, fossil testing machine, hides, beads
and records of philosophical and sociological scholars.

The facility will also play host to statues of notable scientists and statesmen Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Nelson Mandela, Kwame Nkuruma, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, as well as a statue of the monument of ability derived from the school’s logo.

The centre, according to him will, among other things, propagate practical learning in ESUT, broaden the motives of researchers, reorient researchers on research methodologies, link researchers to multiple choice of resource materials, taking into consideration, the quality of facts relayed. It will also integrate researchers on prevailing invents, in relations to their discipline, boost versatility of research lovers and establish ESUT’s presence in the local and international research community.

He explained that the centre has been designed in such a way that there would be three major units viz: the archive gallery, the audio visual centre and the research chat cube.

Chairman of the committee for the proposed project, Mr. Amadi Aroh,
said the project would be funded by donor agencies, adding that
already various organisations have indicated interest in it.

He expressed hope that with the interest shown by the school, the project would commence within the shortest possible time just as he expressed elation that the project was initiated by former students of the department.

Speaking on the development, the School’s Public Relations Officer,
Osita Ugwuoti, said management appreciated the idea of the
centre being proposed by former students.

He assured of its readiness in working with the initiators to ensure that the project comes to fruition.
