Worried by the present state of New Rimawa Model Primary School, Goronyo Local Government, Sokoto State, parents and caregivers in the community have called on the government to come to the aid of the 48-year old school.

The school facility, which is currently in abysmal condition, has not witnessed any form of transformation since inception, as the unfenced compound looks forsaken and unhealthy.A parent, Mrs. Lawan Hauwa, who spoke with The Guardian during a recent visit to the school to assess the impact of the Cash Transfer Programme (CTP) of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), said the decrepit infrastructure discourages parents who were motivated by the CTP from sending their wards to school.

Not only that the pupils sit on the floor during classes, the roof and ceilings of the classrooms were worn-out and most of the teachers displayed poor understanding of the tenets of basic education. This however raises questions on how the state government spends its budgetary allocation, as well as the whereabouts of the State’s Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).

According to Hauwa, “The CTP has helped us in providing educational needs of our children and also in starting up a small business to sustain them in school when the programme ends, but the problem is that there are no chairs in the classrooms for pupils and teachers. With the CTP a lot of parents have sent their wards to school, but no facility to contain the influx of students. We need government to come and help New Rimawa School.”

Another parent, who identified herself as Mrs. Garuba, said, “The school needs more classrooms and furniture as this increase has overstretched facilities on ground. They also need teachers and learning aids. The children are sitting on the floor and some parents refused to bring their children for this singular reason.

Head teacher of the school Mr. Yusuf Abubakar, said with the high number of pupils, there is an urgent need for qualified teachers, additional blocks, chairs and desks, among other tools needed for teaching and learning.

“The number of children before the CTP intervention was less than 300, but presently, we have a total of 1,170 pupils comprising of 575 boys and 595 girls as a result of CTP intervention.”Desk Officer of the school, Yahaya Dello, told The Guardian that government has captured the problems and challenges of the school. “We are expecting their quick intervention any moment from now.”
