Edusoft Foundation moves to stall mass failure in mathematics
As a way of stemming the tide of mass failure recorded by students in public examinations including the West African Senior School Certificate Examinations WASSCE), an educational outfit, Edusoft Empowerment Foundation has launched the ACE Mathematics Programme.
The programme will, among other things, avail Nigerian youths who failed to obtain credit passes in mathematics in WASSCE, an accelerated path by empowering them with the knowledge and skills they need to tackle the subject. This will be under the tutelage of experienced Indian mathematics faculty.
According to Executive Director, Edusoft Empowerment Foundation, Mr. Badri Prasad, “Mathematics remains a fundamental subject that the continuous low pass rate among students should be a cause for worry for parents, organisations, the society and the entire country. Without a sound knowledge of mathematics, manpower development for industrial and economic growth will continue to remain a mirage as the subject is at the core of all courses that have to do with developing a society.”
He added that availing students the opportunity to study in a serene environment, in addition to access to professional mathematics teachers, with many years of experience in tutoring, will no doubt enhance their ability to pass their examination.
The ACE Mathematics Programme, which commences October 7, is in collaboration with the Mathematical Association of Nigeria (Lagos Chapter) and Shrylix Foundation. Twenty students from underprivileged backgrounds will be selected and given scholarships to undergo a five-month mathematics programme at the Edusoft Tutorial Centre in Ilupeju, Lagos, which will prepare them for the senior secondary echool mathematics examination. Additional spaces are available for organisations and parents to sponsor students at considerably reduced rates.
Commenting further on the programme, Prasad said, “Our main focus is educational development and advancement. This unique programme has been carefully designed to give everybody an opportunity to enhance their knowledge of mathematics to prepare them for their future careers. Concerted effort such as this to plug identified gaps in the education system, particularly in mathematics will accelerate Nigeria’s quest to build a formidable manpower base for its development.”
The programme will have several streams every weekday, and each class will be given two-hour tutoring in the subject. At the end of the programme, students are expected to be sufficiently trained to pass mathematics final examination with ease.
Edusoft Empowerment Foundation is the charitable arm of Edusoft Associates Limited. The foundation is focused on aggregating resources, which are thereafter channelled to the development of indigent Nigerians and their communities.
