As part of activities to encourage integrity and best practices in the Nigerian education sector, the main organising committee, Nigeria Education Week (NEW) Award, has urged Nigerians to come out and boldly nominate individuals and corporate organisations that have contributed immensely to the growth and development of education in the country.

Member, Planning Committee of the project, Prof. Adenike Akinjobi, who announced the call, challenged everybody who is interested in the Nigerian education system to valuably join the call and support the programme, which is targeted at bringing a revolution in country’s education scene, particularly the university system.

The award categories include outstanding contributions to education award (individuals); outstanding contributions to education (corporate organisations); prize for excellence in academic publishing; Landmark Achievement Award (LAA) for academic excellence (universities); LAA for academic and research; LAA leadership in education; LAA for exemplary leadership in education; and posthumous award for education development.

Stating that the committee is working hard to get the best nominees, Akinjobi said, “We expect that in this challenging time as evident in our education system, all stakeholders will come out and do the nominations. We expect to see people with outstanding achievement and support in the Nigerian education sector, as individual and corporate organisations. Our target is to achieve that which hadn’t been achieved before by ensuring that at the end of the “NEW 2017 Summit” something positive happens practically to the Nigerian educational system.”

On the compendium, which is also part of the programmes for NEW 2017, she explained, “Our plans in the area of the compendium is to ensure that people that contribute to that collection are experts in their respective fields, so they can easily identify the challenges and give feasible suggestions to address them. What we intend to achieve is to look at the root of the problems in the sector and then resolve the challenges in a manner that will be positive.

NEW 2017 is being put together by The Guardian in partnership with Books and Sports Limited. The programme is designed to bring people together to deliberate on ways of enhancing and improving the sector. The weeklong event will focus primarily on key issues such as challenges facing education development, implementing government policies on the sector as well as funding and government interventions.

Other issues to be interrogated are quality assurance and standards, advancement centres in our universities – the role, employability and alumni and the role of Public-Private Partnerships in education development.
