Buhari orders review of Nigerian university curriculum

President Muhammadu Buhari has charged the National Universities Commission (NUC) to review the nation’s curriculum to meet global demands.Buhari, who disclosed this, yesterday, at the 7th convocation ceremony of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), said universities should be innovative in curriculum development.

The president also emphasised the need for the NUC to keep embarking on strategic capacity building so that academics could be abreast with trends in their subject areas.

He reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring that every facet of university education, including Open and Distance Learning (ODL), gets priority, to provide quality for Nigerians.

“There shall be no discrimination in terms of employability and opportunity for graduates of Open and Distance Learning programmes to pursue higher degrees either in conventional universities or the ODL setting.

“In the light of this, government will continue to accord graduates of NOUN and those of other distant learning institutions due recognition, to buttress the fact that they are not inferior to conventional universities.”

In his address, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who was awarded Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Christian Theology by NOUN, disclosed that the university never gave him any preferential treatment throughout his days as a student in the institution.He said he decided to return to school to prove that there was no age limit to open and distant learning.
