Anchor University has partnered with the University of Colorado to launch a laboratory as part of efforts to make it a research powerhouse in the mathematical, statistical and data sciences.

The centre, which will be named AU Laboratory (AUL) for Interdisciplinary Statistical Science and Data Analysis (AULISSDA), would be inaugurated on Monday, September 4, 2017.

The inauguration lecture titled: The Extraordinary Potential of Data Science and Statistical Collaboration, will be delivered by Eric Vance, a professor of Applied Mathematics and Director of the Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Statistical Analysis (LISA) at the University of Colorado.

Vance said statistics and data science were crucial to the advancement of research and promotion of economic activities. “Through collaborations with statisticians, the extraordinary power of statistics can transform data into impactful research conclusions, improved business practices, and empirically based policy decisions,” he said.

Vice Chancellor of Anchor University, Prof. Joseph Afolayan, said the institution would always welcome collaboration and partnerships designed to promote scholarly activities.

“We have a vision to run with as a university and this initiative has come as one of the tools that will help us achieve that vision. We want AUL to be a hub of scientific research in no distant time,” he said.

While addressing the Faculty members on the project, the Dean of the Faculty of National and Applied Sciences, Prof. Johnson Fatokun said the centre would not only enhance and promote research at the university, but it will also encourage the application of the research findings in real life situations and empower its students with special skills that would stand them out among their peers.

Anchor University’s AUL will become the seventh statistical laboratory set-up by the LISA 2020 programme to create 20 such laboratories in developing countries by the year 2020.
