Justice Femi Adamson of a Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja has ordered remand in prison custody of 24-year-old computer engineer, Ayodeji Folarin for allegedly impersonating the famous gospel artiste, Lara George, and defrauding three Americans of $8,500.

The vacation judge, Adamson ordered that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) remand the defendant in prison following his arraignment.

Folarin was arraigned on a four-count charge of obtaining money by false pretences and possession of documents containing false pretence.

He pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

While stating the fact of the case, the prosecution counsel, Temitope Banjo told the court that the defendant defrauded the foreigners between January and December 2016 in Ikeja, Lagos.

The EFCC alleged that the defendant with intent to defraud posed as Lara George and obtained $8,500 from Trevor Dawe, Rick Cuewo and Stephen Wilson who are all citizens of the United States of America U.S.A.

“On June 2018, Folarin had in his possession, a World Lottery Organisation Winning Certificate and Affidavit of Common Law Marriage which all contained false pretences.

The defendant also had in his possession emails containing false pretences,” he alleged.

According to the prosecution, the offences contravened Sections 1(3), 6 and 8(b) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act 2006.

Following his plea of not guilty, his counsel, Samuel Shodipo asked the court to grant his client bail in liberal terms.

The judge declined to order the bail of the accused and ruled that he be remanded at the Ikoyi Prisons.

He also directed that the case file be taken to the Court Registry (CR) for assignment to another judge that will hear the case.
