Competitions have impacted positively on our students, says deputy governor

Deputy governor of Lagos State, Dr Idiat Adebule has declared that the reforms currently going on in the state public schools is to prepare the students to be globally competitive.

Deputy governor of Lagos State, Dr Idiat Adebule has declared that the reforms currently going on in the state public schools is to prepare the students to be globally competitive.

Adebule who stated this at the grand finale of the Lagos State Schools Governor’s Quiz Competition said the contest has broadened the horizon of school children resulting in noticeable improvement in the results of terminal examinations like the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examination Council (NECO).

“The competition has impacted positively on the academic life of our students since the commencement, it has also given our youths the opportunity to interact with one another, exchange ideas as well as help to enhance the spirit of healthy competition, while promoting friendship and unity amongst the youths. I am happy to inform you that our administration’s intervention in the education sector has been yielding positive results as evidenced by the improved students performance. It has also groomed them such that they now win various competitions with relative ease.”

At the event, Lagos State Senior Model College, Kankon defeated Epe Senior Grammar School to clinch the star prize. Idimu Junior High School, Alimosho and Military Nursery/Primary School, Yaba also beat Community Junior High School, Debojo and Araromi Primary School, Gbagada to win the Junior Secondary and Primary School categories prime trophies.

Adebule announced that Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has approved a cash reward of N100, 000 to all participating students to motivate them and their colleagues while teachers and schools were rewarded with cash gifts ranging from N100, 000 to N250, 000.

The deputy governor explained that the competition was designed to develop the mind of the pupils by creating healthy rivalry among school children in public and private Primary, Junior and Senior Secondary Schools across the state.

“Adebule revealed that public school students have in the last one month won the PZ Cussons Chemistry and NNPC National Science Quiz Competitions.

“Tadese Fatai of Abibat Mogaji Senior School, Iloro won the star prize at the PZ Cussons while the NNPC National Science Quiz Competition States final was won by Ezeunala Ekene Franklin of Meiran Community High School, Meiran.

She advised all children of the State in public or private schools to devote more time to their academic pursuit, invest their youthful energy and intellect to create job opportunities rather that roam the streets and embrace social vices like internet fraud, hooliganism, rape, examination malpractice, alcoholism, and drug abuse.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mrs Adebunmi Adekanye said the standard of questions posted to the pupils and the ease with which they answered them was a testimony to the quality of education that the state provides.
