APC, PDP tango over Fayose’s achievements
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are quarreling over the achievements of Governor Ayo Fayose in the last two years.
While the APC scored Fayose low and described his performance as reversal of fortunes, the PDP said the governor has corrected the anomalies of APC and was showing the opposition how to govern with meaningful development.
The APC had accused the governor for claiming credit for what his predecessor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi achieved in office, saying partitioning of roads built by the former governor and erecting electricity poles he bought in local governments should not be projects that Fayose will be celebrating as achievements.
The party said instead of acting as an agent of change for development, the governor has in two years reversed the fortunes attained by his predecessor in four years.
Publicity Secretary of the APC, Taiwo Olatunbosun, who reviewed the governor’s activities in the last two years in a statement in Ado-Ekiti, said it is regrettable that Fayose came on board through alleged fraudulent means and “has been using that fraud to sustain himself in power. Recent revelation and confession of former Minister of State for Defense, Mr. Musiliu Obanikoro that Fayose shared in the loot of the national treasury with which his election was funded is a cause of concern to Ekiti people.”
Condemning the governor for allegedly relying on lies and deceits to run his government, Olatunbosun said: “Governor Fayose since assumption of office has reeled out different figures, including N86b, N78b, N35b, N68b and N72b at different times, as Ekiti debts owed by former his predecessor, to deceive the people on the actual debts profile of the state, thereby using that as excuse to owe workers’ salaries and failure to implement capital projects.
He asserted that Fayose abandoned revenue-spinning Ikogosi Resort to rot as well as ditched the development of tourism corridors in Efon, Oke-mesi, Ipole-Iloro and Ikogosi began by Fayemi, in favour of local ‘ogogoro’ joints across the state.
“He dissolved and revoked the creation of Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the state that would have helped in revenue mobilisation as well as creating job opportunities while he demoted directors of administration, treasurers, auditors, store-keepers, pay masters, environmental officers and other cadres of officers posted to the local council development areas created by Fayemi.
Besides, the APC spokesman maintained that the governor has owed the state workers over six months salaries and two years leave bonus while pensioners are owed eight months, not because the state does not have the money, but because he has a different agenda.
“Pupils in public and private schools are now paying development levies, including government stoppage of payment of external exams fees, while also imposing obnoxious taxes on artisans, timber contractors, meat sellers, truck pushers and quarry workers, all of which have adverse effects on the poor masses,” he added.
However, the Publicity Secretary of PDP, Mr. Jackson Adebayo, said the PDP-led government has succeeded in reversing the misfortunes placed on Ekiti and the people by the immediate past government of the APC.
Adebayo said the Fayose-led administration in the last two years, took Ekiti to a place of pride in the areas of education, infrastructure, security, health, social amenities among others.
“By the time the APC-led government left the scene in October 2014, Ekiti was ranked 35t in West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) and National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations; we came on board, took the state to 11 and first in WAEC and NECO by 2016. The records are there for all to see. They plunged the state into huge debts with nothing to show for it. They embarked on white elephant projects and litter the state with uncompleted ones.
He said when PDP came on board, the government built Adunni Olayinka Women Centre, dualised Awedele Road, as well as constructed Petim-Afao Road and De Head- Police Headquarters Road.
“We dualised roads in Ikole, Emure, Omuo, extended the
dualisation of the road in Ikere, dualised Efon township road, embarked on the construction of a new Ojaba Market, new Governor’s Office and a new High Court Complex and the masterstroke is the flyover bridge in Ado-Ekiti.
“There is no doubt that the people of the state are happy that we have come to take away the misfortunes placed on Ekiti by the APC, Kayode Fayemi and his co-travellers in their party who misruled the state for four years. The people of the state know the huge revenue that they got while in office and are appreciative of our achievements despite the lean resources at our disposal,” he declared.
Adebayo noted that APC was only displaying its low intelligence on what development should be, stressing that this same mentality made Fayemi administration to fail which almost ruined the state before Ekiti people rejected them.
The PDP spokesman wondered how someone could describe an overhead bridge, ultra modern Oja Oba Market and dualization of major roads in virtually all the local government areas as a reversal of fortunes when those things never existed before.
He advised APC leaders and members to stop thinking backwards.
