The Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos, Ms Yan Yuqing, has restated the commitment of the Chinese community and enterprises in Lagos to keep up with their “Renewed Hope, Rebirth from the Light” charity programme, aimed at assisting the underprivileged.

The community said this was displayed through the cataract surgeries for which it collaborated with Lagos State Ministry of Health to sponsor eight children.

According to them, the surgeries, held at the General Hospital Odan, Lagos Island, on Friday, covered children between the ages of nine months and 14 years.

While they disclosed that the beneficiaries were children from low-income families, they identified Romiluyi Ododololuwa Honour, Romiluyi Otitololuwa Grace, Omale Anifat, Divine Taiwo, Royan Yekini, Dosunmu Habeeb, Gbagidi Delight, Deborah Nelson, as the beneficiaries.
Speaking at the event, the representative of the Consul-General, Lei Yu, said the Chinese Consulate and the Chinese community and enterprises are projecting the “Renewed Hope, Rebirth from the Light.”

Also speaking, a member of the Chinese community and enterprises in Nigeria, Mrs Loi Eng Koon, said: “This is the second surgery that we are supporting through the Renewed Hope, Rebirth from the Light charity programme, initiated by the Consul-General, Ms Yan Yuqing, last year, when three Nigerians went through a successful surgery.

“Some of us have been here for a long time, more or less, Nigerian is our home, so we put everything together to help people that are in need. This is just the beginning. We are willing to help the underprivileged children whose parents are financially handicapped to foot their medical bills.”
On his part, Permanent Secretary, Lagos Ministry Of Health, Dr Olusegun Ogboye, said: “We have a blindness prevention programme in the state. One of our activities is medical outreaches to restore sight to people with visual challenges like cataracts. From time to time, we get organisations that support these outreaches. For this particular outreach, it is being supported by the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos and the Chinese community and enterprises in Nigeria.”

One of the beneficiaries’ father, Mr Temitope Romiluyi, said: “The situation of my twin children was pathetic. I couldn’t afford the surgery until I got the message from the Lagos State Ministry of Health that the Chinese Community is sponsoring the surgeries. My family and I are very grateful for coming to our aid.”
